Beware of viruses circulating

It's not that I don't appreciate the warning but for those passing on the email warning about the Life is Beautiful virus, you can stop hitting the send button now.

It's a hoax.

One of many that are constantly circulating around the Internet, this one dates back to 2002 and every once in a while it starts popping up in inboxes with this urgent directive:

"Please Circulate ASAP - NOT A JOKE - URGENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..."

Now you're hooked it goes on to claim the information is fresh "this morning" from Microsoft and Norton. It warns users not to open an email wtih a PowerPoint entitled 'Life is Beautiful."

" If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful,'" the email reads.
"Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password."

So don't feel guilty if you don't pass along along this Internet myth to all your friends and colleagues.

But do be wary of the viruses, spyware, phishing scams and other creepy crawlies that are constantly making their way around World Wide Web, looking for new victims.

As a standard practice, don't open attachments unless you know what they are and who they are from. And even then ensure your virus software is up-to-date and autimatically scanning your email. Often scams, as with a recent phishing one that swept through Twitter, come from people you know. The people who are creating these things know you're more likely to open a file from someone you know, or to click through to a Web site that is recommended by a friend.

It's not enough to install anti-software and never look at it again -- virus definitions are constantly being updated and it's best to set your anti virus and anti spyware software to automactically update regularly.

Life is beautiful indeed.
